In China, Doyle expects 'rhetoric' in tire dispute

MADISON (AP) -- Gov. Jim Doyle may hear criticism directly over President Barack Obama's decision to impose tariffs on imports of Chinese-made tires.

The governor arrives in China on Wednesday for a trade mission as the country's leaders are denouncing Obama's decision as an unfair restraint of free trade.

Speaking Tuesday from Tokyo, Doyle says he expects "some real rhetoric and discussion about this." He says he's meeting with the Chinese deputy secretary of commerce who has been a staunch supporter of free trade.

The governor says that if the Chinese are critical, he will respond he is there looking for ways to promote economic development in Wisconsin and China.
