MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Four fumbles by Wisconsin's top two running backs last week has shaken up who will start on Saturday in the Big Ten opener against Michigan State.
Redshirt sophomore John Clay got his first start last weekend against Wofford but fumbled three times. That performance helped put junior Zach Brown back at the top of the depth chart this week. He fumbled once.
But coach Bret Bielema said at his weekly news conference Monday that both players will have to battle for the starting slot this week during practice.
Bielema says he wants to see how well both players respond.
He also says that freshman running back Erik Smith is also in the mix.
Clay rushed for 70 yards against Wofford. Brown had 63 yards and two touchdowns. Smith carried for 59 yards.
