MADISON (AP) -- Wisconsin school superintendent Tony Evers plans to deliver his first State of Education speech on Thursday.
The speech comes at the same time Evers is working with Gov. Jim Doyle and other policy makers on trying to put Wisconsin in good position to qualify for federal education stimulus money.
Under the Race to the Top program, more than $4 billion is available to states that can meet certain criteria.
Wisconsin is one of only three states that would be disbarred from qualifying because it doesn't allow teachers to be evaluated based on how well students do on tests.
The Legislature is expected to take up a bill this fall that would change state law to ensure Wisconsin can qualify.
