Badger men's hockey team ranked 14th in preseason poll

MADISON, Wis. (PRESS RELEASE)- The 2009-10 USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine men's hockey preseason rankings were released on Monday, Sept. 28, and the UW men found themselves at 14.

Wisconsin, one of five WCHA teams ranked among the nation's top 15, collected 80 points to check in at the No. 14 spot.

2009 NCAA runner-up Miami (Ohio) claimed four first-place votes, but still managed to squeeze out the top ranking by two points with 457 total points. The Red Hawks edged Denver, which led all schools with 13 first-place votes. The Pioneers earned 455 points. Rounding out the top five were Boston University, Michigan and Notre Dame. Defending NCAA champion BU took home 12 first-place votes and 438 points. Notre Dame grabbed the final five first-place votes.

Other ranked WCHA schools include No. 6 Minnesota, No. 8 North Dakota and No. 13 St. Cloud State. Minnesota Duluth and Colorado College are listed in the others receiving votes category.

The Badgers finished last season unranked, but skated to a 20-16-4 overall mark and third-place WCHA finish.

Coach Mike Eaves and the Badgers begin practice this Saturday in the Kohl Center, followed by their Red and White Scrimmage the following Friday. The first puck officially drops on Friday, Oct. 16, when the Badgers play host to Colorado College beginning 7 p.m. at the Kohl Center.
