MADISON, WI (PRESS RELEASE) - The defending national champions will start this season the way last season ended, at No. 1. The Wisconsin women's hockey team is atop the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Preseason Poll, which was released Tuesday.

The Badgers grabbed the preseason No. 1 ranking after collecting 190 points and all 19 first-place votes. During the 2008-09 championship season, Wisconsin held the No. 1 ranking for 16 USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Polls. The UW finished the season with a 34-2-5 record en route to its third NCAA title in four years.

Last year's national runner-up Mercyhurst College ranks second with 162 points, with the University of Minnesota (153) and the University of Minnesota Duluth (126) holding the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively. The University of New Hampshire (113) rounds out the top five.

Along with seven non-conference matchups on Friday (Oct. 2), the Hockey East Association and Western Collegiate Hockey Association begin conference play.

Wisconsin hosts North Dakota the opening weekend at the Kohl Center Friday and Saturday night. The Badgers will also unveil the 2009 national championship banner Friday night before the start of the game.

ABOUT THE POLL: The 13th annual USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the four NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey Magazine, the most widely distributed hockey magazine in the world.
