Mich. man struck with bat faces prison in break-in

JACKSON, Mich. (AP) -- A Jackson man who authorities say had his jaw broken by a naked, baseball bat-wielding homeowner during a break-in has been sentenced to at least seven years in prison.

Jackson County Circuit Judge Thomas Wilson on Thursday sentenced 25-year-old Ronald Powell to seven to 20 years in prison.

Powell pleaded no contest Sept. 1 to first-degree home invasion. A no-contest plea is not an admission of guilt but is treated as a conviction.

Tim Maynard's home in Jackson was broken into early on Aug. 5. The 28-year-old Maynard said he struck the suspect with a baseball bat he keeps under the bed for "just such an occasion."

Defense attorney Wendell Jacobs said Powell entered the plea because he had no defense in the case and can't remember the incident.
