Congressman Obey voices concern on cost of Afghan troop surge

STEVENS POINT (WAOW)-- A Wisconsin politician is voicing his concerns about the proposed troop surge in Afghanistan.

This morning Congressman Dave Obey spoke before hundreds of people at the Wisconsin Town Associations State Convention in Stevens Point.

Obey questions whether our country is in a financial situation to take on an additional $800 billion in military costs, at a time when healthcare reform and the economy are of great concern.

Congressman Obey says, "... it's not a question of finding a balance... national security always comes first... but we have to understand that if we commit to a 10 year effort in Afghanistan, that will devour virtually every other priority we have... and I don't think the country will stand for it. "

Obey says the first thing we have to do is get the economy moving again, and then turn to energy, and deal with the long term problems surrounding social security and Medicare.

Obey says, "... these are big ticket issues that require adult approaches and we have to recognize something like Afghanistan... threw a huge monkey wrench in our ability to afford all of this."

Ultimately, Obey says he just wants people to understand how the cost of the Afghan war, would impact our country.
