Wis. unemployment improves for 4th straight month

MADISON (AP) -- Wisconsin's unemployment rate has improved for the fourth straight month.

The Department of Workforce Development said Thursday the rate declined 0.7 percentage points in September from the previous month.

The state unemployment rate is now 7.7 percent. That's well ahead of the national average of 9.5 percent, which improved only 0.1 percentage points from the previous month.

Wisconsin's rate equals its lowest of the year, but it's still well above where it was a year ago. The state unemployment rate in September 2008 was 4.2 percent.

The report says 12,600 fewer people were employed in September from August, and 121,300 fewer than a year ago.
