White House: 650,000 jobs in new stimulus report

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House says new job numbers will show the president's economic stimulus plan has directly created or saved about 650,000 jobs.

A government oversight board will release the numbers later Friday, and White House economic adviser Jared Bernstein says officials have been told the figures. When adding in jobs linked to $288 billion in tax cuts, Bernstein says the stimulus plan has created or saved more than 1 million jobs.

The job numbers cover a huge swatch of spending by state and local governments, businesses and universities that received federal aid.
