(STEVENS POINT) - The Pointers opened the game on a 17-3 run and held a 22-9 edge over UW-Whitewater with 6:10 remaining in the first half, but a 21-3 run by the Warhawks to end the opening half was too much to overcome as the 24th-ranked Pointers fell to the 11th-ranked Warhawks 76-71.
Poor shooting plagued both teams early in the first half. With the score tied at 1-1 with 15:10 remaining in the game's opening half, the Pointers began to pull away, sparked by a Cassie Bandow (Plover) three-pointer to build a 14 point lead midway through the opening period.
Then, just as fast as it got hot for the Pointers, it cooled, and the pressure of the Warhawk defense began to force turnover after turnover as the Warhawks steadily chipped away at the Pointer lead until the Warhawks took their first lead of the half at the 2:26 left and continued to out-score the Pointers on their way to a 30-25 halftime edge.
In the second half, the Warhawk defense continued to force turnovers but the Pointers stayed close early, but the lead grew to 12, 59-47, with 8:49 remaining. The Pointers came fighting back, cutting the deficit to just two, 64-62, with 2:49 remaining, but clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch by the Warhawks sealed the five point victory.
Bandow added three rebounds and two assists to her team-high 18 point effort before fouling out. Britta Petersen (Luck) added 16 points and seven rebounds while Andrea Flease (New London) added 12 points on the evening. Josi Schultz (Eau Claire) had a team-high 10 rebounds and added six points on the evening.
UW-Whitewater's Heidi Sonntag led the way with 22 points while Kelsey Hendrickson added 21 for the Warhawks.
UW-Stevens Point will try to end their two game losing streak when they return to the court tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 11 as they host Luther College in non-conference action in Berg Gym. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m.
