WAUSAU (WAOW)- As the only senior on the 2009-2010 Newman girls basketball team, Katie Siewert has to step up, and so far her senior year she's done just that. Although she won't actually admit that she feels pressure to.
Says Kaitlin Siewert, "I don't feel like I'm the only senior, when I look at my team I just feel like I'm one of them, I know people ask me, what's it feel like to be the only senior, but I don't feel like that."
Says Head Coach Tom Weinkauf, "She started with the other three last year so I guess she doesn't feel the pressure of being the only senior because she's not the only returner, there are other kids there."
But nonetheless the senior is putting in 12.5 points per game in the Marawood for the Cards helping lead number three ranked Newman to a 4-1 start.
Says Siewert, "I can't take all the credit for that because playing with my teammates, if they didn't have that extra pass there, I wouldn't have a basket, so it's a group effort in that I've come on top in some of them, and other times somebody else might."
Says Weinkauf, "She handles the ball, she runs her offense, as you can see, she gets a lot of rebounds, she gets a lot of steals, she runs the show and she can score obviously, so she's very important to us."
She's getting it done in all other areas as well. She also leads Newman in steals, rebounds and assists so far in conference play. Siewert gets it done on both ends of the court.
Says Siewert, "I feel that if I work harder on defense, that everything else will come together and it's something that we work on in practice all the time."
Says Weinkauf, "She's quick and she gets a lot of pressure on the ball and that helps too."
The Cards hit the floor again on Friday visiting Northland Lutheran.
