Ice boater dies after falling into Lake Monona

MONONA (AP) -- An ice boater has died after falling through the ice on Lake Monona.

The Madison Fire Department Lake Rescue Team received a report shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday of a person in the water near a boat landing in the city of Monona. Callers reported seeing an ice boat sail sticking out of the water.

Madison Fire Department spokesman Eric Dahl tells WISC-TV that team members used cold water rescue suits and ice sleds to cross the thin ice.

Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney says the man's body was found in the water and his hands were clinging to the ice.

Sgt. Kerry Porter of the sheriff's department says the man was pronounced dead at UW Hospital in Madison.

His name has not been released.
