Chairperson says Wood deserves time for disciplinary hearing

MADISON (WAOW) -- The chairperson of a special legislative committee considering disciplinary action against Representative Jeff Wood (I-Chippewa Falls) believes he deserves time to prepare a defense of his actions.

"If I was in his shoes, I would want time," says Rep. Mary Hubler (D-Rice Lake). "This is a new procedure."

In a letter to Hubler, Wood asked for 60 days to hire an attorney and to respond to proposed discipline which could include expulsion from the legislature. Expulsion hasn't happened in more than 90 years.

Wood was arrested on suspicion of operating under the influence three times in a recent twelve month period, and has two previous drunk driving convictions.  He faces criminal charges in 3 different counties.

The legislature's ethics committee required Wood to respond to proposed discipline over his conduct by this week.

Hubler says she will poll committee members before determining a hearing date.
