Red Cross: bodies won't spread disease

GENEVA (AP) -- The International Committee of the Red Cross says it's a myth that dead bodies cause epidemics after natural disasters.

A forensic expert says the bodies of people who have died in disasters don't spread disease because they died of trauma. The Red Cross says its forensic specialists will help ensure that the dead are recovered and identified.

There's no firm estimate of the number of dead. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said it could be "tens of thousands."

Impoverished Haiti doesn't have the heavy equipment to lift tons of rubble from collapsed buildings to search for survivors and recover the dead. Some rescue teams are bringing in their own.
