Dog Treat Recall

WAUSAU (WAOW)--An alert has been issued on some dog food treats. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumer NOT to use Merrick Beef Filet Squares for dogs. The package date of "Best By 111911" may be contaminated with Salmonella. They were packaged in 10-ounce green, red and tan re-sealable plastic bags.

According to an FDA news release, the products were distributed nationwide through retail stores and on the Internet.

So far there are no reports of illnesses associated with the products. But the FDA says it's best for consumer to avoid handling the products or giving them to their pets.

Salmonella can affect both humans and animals. People handling dry pet treats can become infected with Salmonella, especially if their hands are not thoroughly washed after having contact with a contaminated treat.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella may experience flu like symptoms. Although rare, Salmonella can result in more serious infections. Consumers who believe they became ill after handling the dog treats should talk with their doctor.
