WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) -- The South Wood County Humane Society in Wisconsin Rapids is raising money to move into a new shelter building.  It's a move, that will cost about $450,000.

People in that community are already contributing to the cause, by getting their paws on a book.  Every dollar of the proceeds will go into that building fund.

Deborah Matuszeski is a member of the Hearts of Wisconsin Leadership group.  About a year ago, her group started work on a project in hopes of supporting the community and bringing awareness to a cause.  They chose the South Wood County Humane Society as their cause. The project, a coffee table book called A Paw Print on Hope.

Every page is filled with pictures of animals and sponsored by an area business.  Those sponsorships, on top of grants and donations, helped HOW raise every dime they needed.

Matuszeski says, "Anything now is just gravy. It all goes to the humane society."

The books sell for $25 at numerous businesses throughout Wood County.  Every dollar goes into the Humane Society's building fund.

"This book has the potential to raise up to $40,000 if every one sells because they printed 2,000 of them." Says, SWCHS Executive Director, Phil Hartley.

He says $40,000, plus other donations, will put them well over half way toward their $450,000 goal.

As soon as possible, leaders hope to move every dog and cat into a new building.  One with double the room, that can hold many more animals.

"This building right here is about 30 years old and it's about 3,000 square feet and it can handle, right now, about 30 dogs and 60-70 cats at a time." Hartley adds, "We're very squished in this building and very cluttered and tight."

Tight, like the community.  One who's helping make a new shelter dream a reality.

"We really need a new place of business for the humane society." Matuszeski adds.
