MINNEAPOLIS - UW-Stevens Point received all 25 first place votes on their way to becoming this week's unanimous choice for the nation's new top team in Division III, as the Pointers rank No. 1 in the D3hoops.com poll.
The Pointers (15-1, 6-1 WIAC) moved up from the No. 2 spot last week by pushing their unbeaten streak to eight games, defeating UW-Platteville and UW-Superior. The Pointers were also aided by losses from several other top-5 teams, including former No. 1 Randolph-Macon who fell to Eastern Mennonite last week.
This marks the 21st time in the history of the D3hoops.com poll the Pointers have reached the top spot and the 11th time it has been a unanimous selection.
The Pointers were No. 1 for a seven week stretch to start the 2004-05 season, their longest stretch as the nation's top team, and were last ranked No. 1 heading into the final week of the season during the 2007-08 season. That season the Pointers reached the Sweet 16 before falling to Washington University (Mo.).
UW-Stevens Point returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 20, when the team travels to UW-Eau Claire. The Pointers close out the week with their third consecutive road game, as they face the Titans of UW-Oshkosh on Jan. 23.
