BUTTERNUT, WISCONSIN (WAOW)-- Birds Eye Veneer of Butternut filed paperwork with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development alerting the state that it will shut down operations at the end of March.

The shutdown will impact 44 employees, who will be given assistance by the DWD's regional partner, Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board in Ashland.

The January 28 letter to the DWD says the plant will shut down at the close of business on March 31, 2010.  The letter states that affected employees will be allowed to apply for jobs at other veneer mills within the Birds Eye Veneer company, if they are interested.

According to the company website, Birds Eye Veneer has been making hardwood veneer products in Butternut since 1912.  The website goes on to say at one point in its history the company produced 75% of the birds eye maple veneer in the world.
