WIAA state hockey and hoops telecasts in HD this March
STEVENS POINT, WI (PRESS RELEASE) – The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association and its State Television Network partner, Quincy Newspapers, Inc., announce plans to telecast the 2010 State Boys and Girls Basketball Tournaments and the State Boys and Girls Hockey finals in high definition on WIAA State Television Network stations, which will also add affiliate KBJR-TV in Duluth/Superior in March.
"The telecast of the State Basketball Tournaments and more recently the State Hockey Finals are a great tradition in our state that dates back to the early 1960s," said Dave Anderson, Executive Director of the WIAA. "We are extremely fortunate and unique to have dedicated broadcast partners that can deliver complete and high-quality telecasts of our tournaments into homes throughout the state. We extend our continued appreciation and gratitude to the WIAA State Television Network and its sponsors for their commitment to high school sports in Wisconsin."
The additional station gives the WIAA State Network over-the-air coverage of the tournaments into households throughout the entire State of Wisconsin; which is comparable to the ninth largest television market in the country.
"This is a great addition to an already great State Network, and it is something we have been working on for five years," said Laurin Jorstad, Executive Producer of the WIAA-QNI State Television Network. "This now gives us free over-the-air WIAA television coverage for all Wisconsin television markets."
In addition to KBJR-TV, the Network includes WAOW-TV in Wausau, WKOW-TV in Madison, WQOW-TV in Eau Claire, WXOW-TV in La Crosse, WYOW-TV in Eagle River, WMLW-TV in Milwaukee and WACY in Green Bay/Appleton. QNI has been a WIAA broadcast partner for the State tournaments since 1968.
Audiences watching WIAA programming on those stations will now be able to enjoy them in high definition (where available), which accentuates the leadership role the WIAA and the WIAA State Television Network has achieved in delivering high school State Tournaments to Wisconsin households.
"We believe in the importance of broadcasting in a ‘state of the art' delivery system," said Jorstad. "It will complement and compete with any other network sports telecasts being offered anywhere, and we eagerly look forward to this pace-setting broadcast opportunity."
Sponsors of the State telecasts are Rural Mutual Insurance Companies, Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, Marshfield Clinic, Menards, Associated Banc-Corp and the Wisconsin Education Association Council.
The WIAA State Boys and Girls Hockey Tournaments are scheduled for March 4-6 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. The live broadcast of the State Girls Hockey final is slated for Saturday, March 6 at noon with the boy's title game immediately following.
The WIAA State Boys Basketball Tournament is scheduled for March 18-20 at the Kohl Center in Madison. The State Girls Basketball Tournament moves back into the Kohl Center this year on March 25-27. Both tournaments will be aired live in their entirety on the WIAA State Television Network.
