Panel to vote on limiting access to court records

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A legislative committee is set to vote Wednesday on a proposal that would restrict public access to online court records.

The bill before the Assembly's Committee on State Affairs and Homeland Security would remove from public view pending cases and those where there was no conviction.

Newspaper and freedom of information groups opposed the bill at a public hearing last week. Supporters included people who say their lives have been ruined because of information about them that's been posted on the site.

The database is extremely popular and gets up to 4 million hits a day.

It is used frequently by attorneys, court officials, bill collectors, landlords and the media but is available to anyone who wants to use it.
