Hunters take fewer turkeys in fall hunt

MADISON (AP) -- State wildlife officials say turkey hunters killed fewer birds in Wisconsin this past fall than last year, despite an additional season.

The Department of Natural Resources says hunters registered 7,073 birds during regular season, which ran from mid-September through mid-November.  They took 1,192 birds during a new December season in five zones for a grand total of 8,265 turkeys.

That's down 22 percent from 10,698 turkeys in 2008, which didn't feature a December hunt.

DNR biologists blame poor brood production. They also point out the agency issued about ten percent fewer permits than in 2008 and 26,000 permits went unsold.
