#20 Pointer women get back on track with 70-46 win over River Falls
STEVENS POINT (PRESS RELEASE) - On senior day, Britta Petersen (Luck) scored 17 points and Andrea Flease (New London) added 14 as the 20th ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team was victorious 70-46 over UW-River Falls Saturday evening at the Berg Gymnasium.
The Pointers scored 24 of their 39 first half points in the paint to post a sizeable 19 point lead by halftime. The Falcons were held to just five field goals in the first half resulting in 20 points.
In the second half the Pointers continued to dominate. They pressured the Falcons into 23 turnovers on the evening turning them into 26 points.
Despite the Pointers shooting just 34.5 percent from the floor in the second half the Falcons could not close the gap. The Falcons poor shooting continued in the second half shooting 31.8 percent and were held to 28.6 percent from the field.
Freshman guards Brooke Allen (Barneveld) and Josi Schultz (Eau Claire) gave the Pointers a spark off the bench scoring eight and six points respectfully. The Pointers were able to push the lead to 28 at two points in the game with both of the baskets being scored by Allen and Schultz.
Senior Ashley Windt (Hurley) hauled in six rebounds helping the Pointers win the battle of the boards 42-31. Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin) racked up seven of her eight rebounds on the offensive glass and also added eight points.
As the Pointers only senior, Windt started all 23 games this season. On the season she is averaging 3.4 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.
The leading scorers for the Falcons were Brittany Gregorich with 14 and Nikki Guhr with 12.
UW-Stevens Point (18-5, 10-4 WIAC) will host UW-Platteville on Wednesday, February 17th in their final home game of the season. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m. in the Berg Gymnasium.
