MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) -- It's tax season and for many filling out all the necessary forms can be very stressful.
But one local organization is trying to make the process easier. The United Way of Marathon County is offering free tax preparation to claim your Earned Income Tax Credit.
Leaders at United way say many families don't realize they qualify and they're trying to make it easy for people to take advantage of the income tax credit due to them.
Joanne Kelly, Executive Director of the United Way of Marathon County says, "Especially for needy families. Those that earn less than $48,000 a year might be eligible for some earn income tax credits and we'd really like to see those dollars get back to this community and to help those families pay their bills we know it's a tough time and it's a very important service."
The average return is about $2,000 but it can be as much as $5,000 per family. To find out if you are eligible call United Way's 2-1-1 or 848-2255 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Eligibility is determined by income, number of people in the household, and number of income earners in the home.
The first workshop is this Saturday and there is a second one March 13th. There is also a free session "Stretching Your Paycheck" between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
