MADISON (AP)-- The state Assembly will attempt to override Governor Jim Doyle's veto of a bill that strip governors of their power to appoint the Department of Natural Resources secretary.
The bill would let the Natural Resources Board, which sets policy for the DNR, appoint the agency secretary. Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan, a Janesville Democrat, issued a statement Monday saying the Assembly would try an override on February 23.
A successful override takes a two-thirds vote of all the members, a tough standard to meet. The Legislature hasn't overridden a veto since 1981.
