TowPlows aid snow plows

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A new type of plow that is pulled from behind a regular snowplow is being tested in two Wisconsin counties.

The so-called TowPlows are being tested by the state Department of Transportation in Eau Claire and Marquette counties.

The department says the new plows are pulled as trailers by regular plows and have pivoting axles that allow the plow to shift to the right when in motion, which allows for more road to be cleared in a single pass.

The department says new plows can clear a path about 20 feet wide compared with 14 feet for a traditional plow. They can also be used to spread salt.

TowPlows have been used in Canada and a number of other states including Minnesota.
