PLATTEVILLE – Junior Scott Hoelzel hit nine of his 14 shots and scored a game high 18 points as the fifth-ranked Pointers men's basketball team knocked off the UW-Platteville Pioneers 78-56 Wednesday evening at Bo Ryan Court.
The Pointers came out shooting hot, hitting 69.2 percent of their shots in the first half but the Pioneers answered, hitting 52.2 percent of theirs. The Pioneers made more free throws than the Pointers attempted hitting nine of their 12 attempts compared to just four of six for Point.
With the score tied at 36 with just under two minutes remaining, the Pointers closed out the half on a 6-0 run to pull in front 42-36.
The Pointers added to their six point halftime lead with a 9-2 run to start the second half. The Pointers were eventually able to push their led out to 22 points, the final margin of victory. Hoelzel led the Pointers in the second half with 10 points and Jared Jenkins added with seven of his game total 17 points in the second stanza.
Senior Matt Moses added 16 points on the evening and now is only 29 points away from reaching 1,000 for his career.
The Pioneers were led by Curt Hanson's 15 points followed with Mike Shaw with 14, Shane Kieler with 12 and Eric Wall with 11.
UW-Stevens Point (21-3, 12-3 WIAC) will finish up the regular season when they travel to UW- La Crosse to face the Eagles Saturday, February 20th. Action is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
