WASHINGTON (AP) -- A newspaper reports that Indiana Congressman Brad Ellsworth has said he is seeking Evan Bayh's U.S. Senate seat.
The Evansville Courier & Press said the 51-year-old Ellsworth made his announcement Friday in Evansville.
A Democratic Party official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because an announcement hadn't been made told The Associated Press Friday that Ellsworth would ask state party officials to place him on the November ballot.
Ellsworth is in his second term from southwestern Indiana's 8th district and has been mentioned as a possible choice for Democrats since Bayh's unexpected announcement Monday that he wouldn't seek a third Senate term.
Ellsworth has won by big margins in both his congressional campaigns. He was a career police officer and was twice elected as sheriff in Vanderburgh County sheriff.
