Davis formally declares run for Wisconsin lieutenant governor

MADISON (AP) -- Republican Brett Davis has formally declared his candidacy for lieutenant governor.

Davis, of Oregon, Wisconsin., is finishing his third term as a state representative. He says he wants to transform the lieutenant governor position into a taxpayer advocate. He says he'll propose nearly $40 million in government spending cuts his first year in office.

Incumbent Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton, a Democrat, has decided not to run for re-election. Three other Republicans besides Davis and four Democrats have filed paperwork to run for the office.

One of the Democratic candidates, Henry Sanders of Waunakee, issued a statement calling Davis' plans "spin." He says Wisconsin residents need more than Republicans' empty rhetoric.
