Teachers union spent most on lobbying in 2009

MADISON (AP) -- The state teachers union spent more than $1.5 million lobbying state lawmakers in 2009, nearly twice as much as the second biggest spender.

The totals were reported on Monday by the Government Accountability Board.

The Wisconsin Education Association Council reported spending more than 7,200 hours lobbying last year. That averages out to more than 19 hours a day or nearly 55 hours on each state lawmaker, roughly an hour a week on each member of the Legislature.

All lobbying organizations reported spending a total of more than $36 million in 2009, up 5.2 percent from 2007.

The most lobbied bill last year was one that removes the governor's power to appoint the head of the state Department of Natural Resources. More than 2,900 hours were spent lobbying that bill.
