23-year-old Wis. social worker survives quake

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A 23-year-old former Marquette University student who had just started a two-year stint as a social worker in Chile says she is OK after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake damaged her living quarters.

Catherine Curley was able to get in contact with her family on Saturday morning several hours after the quake to say that the structure she was staying at in one of the poor neighborhoods in Santiago was still standing, but is without power or water.

Curley's father, Michael Curley of Delafield, tells The Associated Press his daughter left for Chile on Jan. 6 and was supposed to start a job working with grade school children on Wednesday. Now, he says he's not sure what she'll do, but that he's thankful that everyone in her building escaped serious injury.
