MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Mitch Borneman scored a third-period goal to lift Wausau West to a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin Rapids in a WIAA state boys hockey quarterfinal game Thursday at the Dane County Coliseum.
The Warriors senior forward grabbed a carom in the left circle and beat Red Raiders goaltender Steve Kubisiak top shelf for the go-ahead score 4:30 into the third period.
After a scoreless first period, the teams traded goals in the second. Wausau West (26-1-1) took a 1-0 lead at 4:27 when a rebound slipped out to the top of the right circle, where junior defenseman Brett Ziegel slammed home a slap shot.
Wisconsin Rapids (13-12-1) tied the game at 9:25 following a mad scrum in front of the goal. Three Red Raiders got a stick on the puck, and sophomore forward Vince Biegel pushed it past Warriors goalie David Knetter.
Knetter finished with 19 saves. Kubisiak had 33 stops for Wisconsin Rapids.
