DE PERE - The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team snapped St. Norbert's 16-game winning streak as they advanced to the Sectional Finals in the NCAA Division III women's basketball tournament with a 58-71 final.
The Green Knights were able to keep the game close until midway through the first half when the Pointers managed to put together a 19-5 run.
The Pointers were took advantage of stellar defense by Brooke Allen and hot shooting from Cassie Bandow to give Point a 31-20 advantage at half time. Allen was able come up with three steals in the half and helped the Pointers force the Green Knights into 11 first half turnovers. Bandow contributed to the team's 46.7 shooting percent in the first half going 4-of-5 from the floor and led all scorers with 10 points.
Britta Petersen started off the scoring in the second half hitting the team's first three shots giving them a 13 point lead with 17:59 remaining.
The Green Knights could never get anything going in the second half shooting only 40 percent from the floor. The Pointers were able to improve on their first half percentage shooting 52.2 percent in the second and 49.1 percent for the game.
Bandow and Ashley Averkamp both hit two three pointers in the game and led all scorers with 18 points each while Andrea Flease helped out with 14 points and Peterson added 12.
The Pointers were also able to win the battle on the boards out rebounding St. Norbert 39-25 in the contest. Peterson pulled down eight rebounds and Averkamp and Flease helped with seven each.
St. Norbert's scoring was led by Jamie Kuhl with 13. Denise Heuser helped the Green Knights with 12 points of her own and Stefanie Bunday and Emily Otzelberger had 10 each.
UW-Stevens Point (23-6) will now wait until Sunday to see who they will face in the Sectional Finals of the NCAA Division III women's tournament. The next round begins March 12th.
