Pointer men advance to Sweet 16 after 63-48 win over St. Norbert in NCAA 2nd round

STEVENS POINT (PRESS RELEASE) - The fifth ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team used a 14-9 run to open the second half to knock off 15th ranked St. Norbert 63-48 and advanced to the Sectional Finals in the NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament Saturday evening.

The Green Knights were able to stick with the Pointers until Jerrel Harris (Whitefish Bay) knocked down two three pointers and Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee) set up a Scott Hoelzel (Kaukauna) dunk in a 4:02 span giving the Pointers a 19-9 lead. Harris gave the Pointers a spark off the bench, leading the team with 10 first half points and helped pressure St. Norbert in to nine turnovers. Point was able to take advantage of the Green Knights mistakes scoring 12 of their first half 28 points off turnovers.

St. Norbert was able to put together a 9-4 run to close out the half cutting the score to 28-22.

The Pointers opened up the second half with a 14-9 run giving the Pointers a 42-31 lead with 12:05 remaining. The Green Knights were not able to recover and the Pointers defense held St. Norbert to 34.6 percent shooting from the field in the second half and 35.3 percent for the game.

Point was able to seal the game with free throws in the final minutes converting on 11 out of 16 attempts in the second half resulting in the 63-48 final.

Senior Matt Moses led the Pointers in the scoring column with 15 while Harris helped with 14 and Louis Hurd (Portage) chipped in with 12. Hoelzel led the team with eight rebounds with five of them coming on the offensive end.

Dave Wipperfurth topped the Green Knights scoring list with 15 and Chris Peterson added 12.

UW-Stevens Point (25-4) will now wait until Sunday to see who they will face in the Sectional Finals of the NCAA Division III men's tournament. The next round begins March 12th.
