WAUSAU (WAOW)--With so many people out of work, more adults return to school so they can compete in the job market. That's why the face of the student body is changing. The average age of NTC students is now 34 years old.
An NTC administrator says that's because many new students are dislocated workers looking for opportunities. Bill Mead is one of them. He was let go from his job of 27 years.
"After I was laid off, I tried to find another job. I found that I was over qualified or didn't have the degree that the employers wanted. I was told that I was to go back to school and get a new degree," says Mead.
Now, he's double majoring in IT and Networking. Mead says he was hesitant to return to school but found comfort seeing that other classmates were adult students, too.
The VP of Students Services says life experience gives adult workers an advantage over younger recent grads.
