STEVENS POINT (PRESS RELEASE) - In front of a packed house the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team was able to fend off multiple charges from Illinois Wesleyan and punched their ticket to the NCAA Division III Final Four in Salem, VA with a 72-56 victory Saturday evening.

The game started as a back-and-forth battle and no team was able to gain more than a two point lead in the first 8:06 of the contest. Louis Hurd (Portage) was able to hit a jumper to ignite an 8-2 Pointer run which was capped off by a two-handed dunk from Scott Hoelzel (Kaukauna), assisted from Jerrel Harris (Whitefish Bay).

The Pointers were eventually able to build a nine point half time lead at 34-26 despite playing much of the first half without leading scorer Matt Moses because of early foul trouble.

In the second half, Sean Johnson tried to spark a rally for the Titans as he ripped off three consecutive three pointers in a 1:23 span. Harris was able to answer Johnson's shots in that span with a layup and two free throws, keeping the Pointers lead at a comfortable nine points.

After Johnson's flurry of three point baskets, Matt Moses hit a jumper to put the Pointers up 52-41 with 11:07 remaining. The Pointers defense held strong and a layup by Travis Rosenkranz brought the Titans within 11 with 5:41, the closest they would come the rest of the game.

The Pointers were able to hit six of their eight free throws in the final 3:09 to preserve their lead and land them a spot in the Final Four with a 72-56 victory.

Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee) led the Pointers with 15 points while Hurd and Moses scored 12 and 11 respectfully. Harris' 14 points led the team off the bench while Dan Tillema (Randolph) tallied nine in the scoring column while grabbing seven rebounds including three on the offensive end. Nick Krull (Marshall) also had seven rebounds and a team high five assists.

Johnson was the only scorer in double figures for the Titans dumping in 32 points connecting on 12 of 23 shots.  Doug Sexauer pulled down a game high eight rebounds.

UW-Stevens Point (27-4) will travel to Salem, VA to face Randolph-Macon in the Final Four Friday, March 19th. Game time is set for 7 p.m. EST.

More information on travel arrangements will be made available Sunday afternoon.
