Government forecasts widespread spring flooding

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government is warning of major flooding in the Midwest, confirming the fears of people in cities like Fargo, N.D. and Moorhead, Minn., where truckloads of sandbags are already rolling into town.

With the odds of flooding above normal in parts of South and East, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said more than one-third of the contiguous states face an above-average flood risk.

The snow pack tops last year's, when heavy flooding occurred, containing more than 10 inches of liquid water in some locations. The agency said that the threat also extends to Iowa.
