Fargo says Wahpeton crest good sign

FARGO, N.D. (AP) -- Fargo officials spearheading the flood fight against the Red River say they're encouraged by news from an upstream town.

The north-flowing river crested about 60 miles south in Wahpeton overnight at about a foot lower than was predicted. Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker says that's a good sign for Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn.

Walaker says residents should continue to work to protect their homes, but believes the crest in Fargo will come in under the 38-foot mark forecast by the National Weather Service. Flood stage on the river is 18 feet.
