9 taken to North Carolina hospital after bad smell on airplane

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Nine people aboard a US Airways flight bound for Jamaica have been taken to a North Carolina hospital after complaints about strong odors kept the jet grounded.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said Tuesday that passengers began complaining of a foul odor aboard Flight 985 soon after it pushed away from its gate at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport bound for Montego Bay.

Bergen says airport firefighters checked the plane for fumes.

Mecklenburg County ambulance spokesman Jeff Keith says nine people were taken to Carolinas Medical Center, but their conditions did not appear to be life-threatening.

Spokeswomen for US Airways and the airport did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
