PLOVER (WAOW) -- People do amazing things in our communities and those acts often go unnoticed. That's why local Red Cross chapters honor those people with their Real Hero awards.
McCain Foods, a Plover business, is recognized as Portage County's Corporate Hero.
In March of 2009, McCain Foods gave this Emergency Response Vehicle to the American Red Cross Chapters in Wood and Portage Counties. The price tag on this truck is close to $90,000.
Mae Nachman, Regional Executive Director says, "It's something a small local chapter would have a very very hard time with raising the funds to cover those expenses."
McCain Foods of Plover is a global company with factories throughout the United States. Where there's a McCain Plant there's now an Emergency Response Vehicle.
Tony Savarin, McCain Foods Human Resource Manager says, "For our factory and for our folks, it's more than just increasing shareholder value. It's a responsibility for us to help our neighbor. I think our employees and our management team are very excited to be recognized by the American Red Cross."
Wayne Reed, a disaster volunteer for the American Red Cross knows first hand how valuable these trucks are when disaster strikes.
Reed says, "I've been down at 911 and Katrina. These things show up, people have no water and no food. There's no grocery store to go to. No place to go to eat, so volunteers working at the site, these thing are godsends."
This truck can be sent to national disasters like floods and tornadoes. Locally it will be used during single family fires, major fires and other disasters in the community.
Nachman says, "It allows us to do much better service, much quicker and that's one of the things we're always looking to do is serve more people."
Representatives from McCain Foods will be recognized at the Portage, Wood and Clark County Real Hero's banquet March 23rd.
