WAUSAU (WAOW) -- School leaders in Wausau are asking drivers to slow down and be careful.
The message comes after a Wausau child was hit by a car in front of her school. It happened Wednesday morning at Riverview Elementary on Wausua's north side.
The principal says the student was crossing the street when she was struck by a car near Maple Hill Road. She wasn't seriously injured, but with more kids out and about this time of year, drivers need to be alert in school zones.
"When you see those bright colored signs, please pay attention to them and slow down," said principal Steven Miller. "Because they are children and we teach them about being safe but drivers have to be even safer than the children do."
Speed limits are clearly posted at 15 miles an hour in most school zones.
