STEVENS POINT (WAOW) -- People do amazing things in our communities and those acts often go unnoticed. That's why area Red Cross chapters honor those people with their Real Hero awards.

Terry Menzel, a life-long blood donor, is recognized as the Portage County Community Hero.

Menzel started giving blood to the Red Cross as a college student in 1947. He has never missed a local blood drive and in his lifetime he's donated 29 gallons of blood.

Carol Walther, Volunteer Blood Coordinator says, "Every time you donate a pint of blood it saves three people so you can imagine how many people he's saved or extended their lives which has been wonderful. "

Over his years Menzel's donations total 232 pints of blood touching the lives of nearly 700 people.

Menzel and his wife Rose spend the winters in Hawaii, but he will be recognized at the Clark, Portage and Wood County Real Hero's banquet on March 23rd.
