State board won't enforce corporate spending ban

MADISON (AP) -- Wisconsin's elections agency says it will not enforce the state's century-old ban on corporate spending in elections after a U.S. Supreme Court decision made it unconstitutional.

The Government Accountability Board voted Tuesday to stop enforcing the law because it is too similar to a federal law struck down by the high court in January.

Staff members warned that enforcing the state law could invite potentially costly lawsuits from corporations claiming their free speech rights were violated.

Meant to deter corruption, Wisconsin's 1905 law says corporations cannot spend money from their treasuries to donate to candidates, run ads supporting or opposing them or make other expenditures on their behalf.
