DEVELOPING: Union members at Merrill Manufacturing strike

MERRILL (WAOW)--Union members at Merrill Manufacturing Corporation are on strike.

According to a press release from the Merrill Manufacturing president, the company and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, United Lodge No. 2362 failed to come to an agreement. The two sides have been in negotiation since November 2009. The labor agreement expired in December 2009.  A mediator from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service has been helping with the negotiations since then.

According to management, union members rejected two tentative agreements before striking.

In that same press release, Patrick Taylor, President of Merrill Manufacturing Corporation, says, "We are disappointed that a majority of the Union's membership does not recognize the economic realities of the 21st Century marketplace that require companies to make necessary adjustments in order to remain competitive, and, ultimately, to remain in business."

Taylor says Merrill Manufacturing will continue operations by using management personnel, employees that have decided not to strike, and replacement workers if necessary.

Merrill Manufacturing makes wire form products.

The company has been in business since 1916.
