MADISON (WAOW)- It's a Wausau invasion in Madison this week. Newman and West have back to back practices on the Kohl Center court today, and tomorrow will bookend our coverage of the state tournament.
Says Newman Head Coach Tom Weinkauf, "I don't know how many towns are fortunate enough to have two teams at the state tournament at the same time, but this is great that West is here and we're here. Wausau should be well-represented in the crowd."
These 2 teams don't just share a town, but occassionally a court. Newman beat West by 2 in the 3rd game of the year.
Says Newman Junior Taylor Thomas, "It's nice to be able to see a team that we compete against also make it to state. It shows that we have a pretty good non conference."
Thomas and the Cardinals now open state tournament play against a Weston team that, like Newman, is young but long on experience.
Says Weinkauf, "They start 4 juniors. So do we. Their coach said that 4 of them have started for 3 years now."
Wausau West is also quite similar to their opponent from Middleton. Head coach Pat Galligan says he modeled his team after his state quarterfinal foe.
Says West Head Coach Patrick Galligan, "We've seen 'em come up to Wausau for summer tournaments. They play a very aggressive style and that's what we've tried to adopt this year. All their kids can handle the ball pretty well. They play aggressive defense. It's a pretty good program to model yourself after, having made 3 trips to state in a row."
Says West Senior Jessica Waldvogel, "They have the same offense as we do, driving and running. Coach basically puts them as like us."
Newman tips off in the division 4 state semifinals tomorrow morning at 9am. West plays the last game of the day, the D1 quarterfinals, at roughly 8pm. Those games and all others this weekend can be seen right here on Newsline 9.
