Report: Payday lenders gave 75K to state officials

MADISON (AP) -- A new report says payday lenders gave $75,000 to campaign committees controlled by Wisconsin politicians in 2009.

The Wisconsin Democracy Campaign says Democrats who control the Assembly and Senate accepted more than $47,000 in campaign donations from the payday lending and auto title loan industries.

Legislative Republicans accepted $18,300, while Gov. Jim Doyle received $8,120.

The Legislature is considering how to regulate the industry, which has grown tremendously in Wisconsin in recent years. A reform bill has passed the Assembly, but the Senate is considering a different plan. The Democracy Campaign is warning that time is running out for the Legislature to act, given that few days are remaining in the session.
