Marathon Co. Real Heroes: Youth Hero

by Pam Warnke

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW)--  On September 17, 2009, a driver apparently sideswipes a motorcyclist on Grand Avenue.  He goes down and is badly injured.  Chris Weina, at the Kwik Trip nearby, sees him on the ground.

"I thought, I'm going to run over there and see if he's okay-to see if I could help with anything," said Weina.

He runs over and asks an off duty police officer assisting the victim if he needs help.  Weina has lifesaving skills as a trained life guard.

"He said, 'I'll be right back.  You have to start CPR on this man right now.'  So, I began CPR and there were a few construction workers that did help out a little bit.  The emergency medical crew arrived on scene and they had me continue rescue breathing for him because they found a pulse," said Weina.

Even with the lifesaving effort the 57-year-old's injuries are too severe.  He later dies at the hospital.  Following the accident, Weina learns more about the man he worked to save.  He wears an armband given out at his funeral.

"If he would have survived this accident we would have probably been great friends."

Weina's efforts earn him a Youth Real Hero award this 2010.  He says the experience happened in moments, but it taught him a lifetime lesson.

He said, "It's opened my eyes on life a little more.  I take life more seriously."
