Wisconsin donors who violated cap pay $23K in fines

MADISON (AP) -- State regulators say they have collected more than $23,000 in fines from campaign contributors who exceeded the state's limit in 2008.

The Government Accountability Board says seven people violated the state law that allows individuals to give a maximum of $10,000 to candidates during an election cycle.

Fines ranged from $300 to $6,450. The latter was paid by lobbyist Gary Goyke, who gave a total of $14,074 to candidates. Herzing University executive Stacey Herzing gave the most, $18,125, and paid a $3,200 fine.

Investigators say seven others did not violate the law after they provided documentation showing their contributions should have been partially attributed to a spouse.
