MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Taylor Thomas scored 16 points and fellow junior center Erica Hartke added 12 points as Wausau Newman rolled past Black Hawk 64-30 in the WIAA Division 4 girls state championship game Saturday.
Thomas, who added five steals, and Hartke had six points apiece in the second quarter as the Cardinals (26-2) forced 10 turnovers and outscored the Warriors 20-4 to open up a 19-point halftime lead.
Newman scored 29 points on 28 turnovers by Black Hawk (27-2), which had won 25 consecutive games.
Cardinals coach Tom Weinkauf has coached five state championship teams, winning three consecutive titles with the Marathon boys from 1975-77 and also leading the Newman girls to the Division 3 title in 2002.
Melissa Wellnitz led the Warriors with eight points, while fellow junior Rachel Rygh had all seven of her points in the first quarter.
