Eunice Zabel

Eunice Zabel, beloved sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, age 99, died March 22, 2010 at Wausau Manor. 

She was born December 20, 1910 in New London, the daughter of the late David Tyler and Katherine (McMunn) Rickaby.  She married George Zabel on June 15, 1937.  George preceded her in death February 20, 1983.

Eunice graduated from Milwaukee State Teacher's College with a bachelor's degree.  She was a much-loved kindergarten teacher in the Oshkosh Public School System for 24 years.  Eunice was a member of St. Vincent de Paul's Parish in Oshkosh for over 60 years.  She belonged to many civic organizations in Oshkosh; among them were Wisconsin Retired Teachers, Campfire Girls, Catholic women's Club, Paine Arboretum and Twentieth Century Club.  Eunice enjoyed many hobbies, including drawing, needlework, poetry, and playing bridge.

She is survived by her daughter, Lynn (Tom) Grimes, Mosinee; four grandchildren, Danielle (Steve) Chagollan, Los Angeles, CA, Shawn (Tracy) Grimes, Olympia, WA, Patrick (Gabrielle) Grimes, Madison, and Ryan (Angela) Grimes, Sun Prairie; 5 great-grandchildren, Kathryn, Owen, Gabriel, Celia, and Alexander all of which gave her great joy.  Also survived by one sister-in-law, Erna Gorichanaz and numerous nieces and nephews.

Eunice is preceded in death by her huband, George; her sister, June (Rickaby) Roethig; and her brother, Clair D. Rickaby.

A memorial mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday March 29, 2010 at St. Anne Church, 700 W. Bridge St. Wausau.  Rev. Steven Brice will officiate.  Burial will be held at the Most Precious Blood Cemetery in New London.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

Brainard Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to Father Carr's Place 2B in Oshkosh or the American Red Cross.
