STEVENS POINT (WAOW)- After falling to St. Thomas in last year's D3 Midwest Regional, the Pointer baseball team was already thinking about the 2010 season and a chance at redemption.
Says Pointer Head Coach Pat Bloom, "It really leaves a bad taste in your mouth because we feel like we have a good club, and we feel we have the type of team who can play its best late in the season."
Says Junior Scott Williams, "We were that close to getting to that point and having a chance to play for a national title, that makes a lot of drive for a lot of players on the team and it showed in the offseason with how hard everyone worked."
And Point is favored by the coaches to take home another WIAC crown this year, the team bringing back the majority of its lineup, 8 starting position players in fact, which helped win the conference title a year ago.
Says Senior Brad Archambeau, "Obviously experience matters a lot here, especially with college baseball. Like you said, we have eight guys in the lineup coming back and we expect big things this year."
Says Senior Jeremy Richter, "This year more than last year, we know how to win a big game, and I think we know what it takes to bring to the table every day to go out there and beat the St. Thomas's and the other good teams in this country."
Maybe even more importantly is that pitching staff which brings back experienced arms, namingly Scott Williams and Joel Delorit who anchor the Pointers on the mound.
Says Bloom, "We feel like we have some power arms and we feel like we have a good defense overall, especially in the infield."
Says Williams, "The pitching is definitely one of the key things in any team's success, and having the majority of our staff back is gonna be big."
So the season definitely looks bright for the 15th ranked team in the country who hits the field next against Ripon on Saturday.
